Anya Jenkins
was a former vengeance-demon. Originally known as Aud, a
demon named D'Hoffryn offered her a job as a vengeance
demon after she cursed her husband Olaf. She was a
vengeance demon for over a thousand years until she was
rendered human when her power centre was destroyed.

Anya,
as she became known, learned to become human, and was
getting on quite well until her husband to be, Xander
Harris, dumped her at the altar. Anya turned back to her
demonic ways for a period until she realised she was no
longer cut out to be a demon. After paying the price and
becoming human for a second time, she gave her life to
save the world.
Emma was originally signed to play
Anya/Anyanka for only one episode. The producers had her
reprise her role twice before bringing her on board as a
recurring character for season 4 and eventually a regular
cast member from season 5 onwards.
